Müller was born in what is now the Czech Republic and began his art studies specializing in porcelain painting. He moved to Dresden in 1890 where he remained throughout his life. He was a professor and later president of the Dresden Academy where Otto Dix was one of his most noted students. During WWII, Müller lost his professorship because of "subversive tendencies in his art." Though relatively unknown, some critics consider him one of the fathers of surrealsim. His fantastic and dream-like images often include various human, plant and animal forms from the natural or an unnatural world.
