Marco Maggi
Tablet, 2014
Pencil on clayboard
14 x 11 inches
$10,000 (framed)

The artist begins by coating a masonite board with a very fine, smooth and durable clay surface. Then, using a fine and hard graphite pencil, he draws the image. From a distance, you see what appears to be a mottled surface as the lines are thin and exact. Upon closer inspection (see Detail) they reveal delicate geometric, occasionally bulbous and slightly amorphic shapes. Because the plaster surface is extremely fine and hard, the lines remain precise. The look of this piece is similar to an etching or even an etching stone or plate which harkens back to Maggi's beginnings as a print maker.

The piece is framed in a plexiglass box designed by the artist. Becuase the box is faced with plex, there is plenty of protection of its surface from damage.
