The chair is part of the artist's Emergent Object series, where the sculpture is produced manually in a process that mimics the mechanisms of 3D print technologies.
This from the gallery regarding durability; "These works do look delicate, but are much more durable than they appear. You shouldn't sit on them, but moving or handling the chairs is not an issue. They've been shipped to Europe without a problem. Some grains of sand might fall off if the piece is moved, but there won't be any crumbling chunks if properly handled. The chairs all have steel frames and the resin that is poured with the sand keeps the integral structure in place."
