Winqvist is a Finnish artist who remembers that as she grew up in the 50's, most Finns lived in the country side and lived a self-sufficient life. Materials were used and reused and craft skills were passed from one generation to another. Importantly to her, she remembers how paper would be reused and reappropriated, as an ersatz textile material. It could be spun into yard or woven into fabric. Paper was woven into sheets, string and packaging materials all to replace scarce or unobtainable textile fibers. It has been said that the Finns live off of paper.
Winqvist twists unbleached paper with glue fashioning pipe-like sticks that remind her of wood. These are joined with tightly knotted thread. Those are crafted into structures based on durable natural forms such as crystals, skeletons, leaves and eggshells.
