Mr. Kolár was a writer, poet and visual artist. He joined and left the Communist Party in Czechoslovakia and was later imprisoned for his writings. His poetry ranged from highly erotic to existential and lastly "poetic diaries". In the '60's he gave up writing and began making art, first by combining painting with poetry but soon after, he devoted himself to exclusively visual arts. While he is often referred to as a collagist, he distinguished himself by transforming or disfiguring found works rather than the customary cutting and combining generally associated with collage.

His techniques include confrontage, froissage and rollage, terms that he or his contemporaries coined to describe and distinguish their style. Froissage, for instance, is the process in which the contours of a crumpled piece of paper or existing print are used to create an abstract work.
